Control Options within InDesign

You can decide what layers are editable in the Layers panel once you have 'initialized' your template from the PrintUI Management extension menu within InDesign.

Initializing a template will create a new 'Background' folder. The Background layer is where you put all the layers that you do not want edited.

Objects whose container (i.e. size and position) is not editable, but the content can be edited should be left above the Background layer but locked.

Objects whose container AND content are editable should be left unlocked.

Template Options is where you define the graphic file formats which are acceptable, as well as the minimum Line Art and Raster resolution.

For applications where the template can be output at different sizes, you can define those output sizes under Edit Size Presets.

Note: For text layers, only the fonts present in the document, or uploaded to your PrintUI account by your Customer Success Manager, will be available for selection and use online.

Once all options are set, you can proceed to Preflighting, Packaging and Uploading your template. Preflighting will examine the template is all set correctly; Packaging will pull all the linked files together and create the necessary auxiliary files for Upload; Uploading will upload your template to the server, and make it available as a new InDesign Template resource accessible from IntelligenceBank.

When adding or editing a new InDesign Template resource, you can set the following options at the Template level:

  • User can add a new Text layer
  • User can add/remove Pages
  • User can add new Image
  • Image Source: User can select an image from their Desktop, Related (if a Folder is related, all supported assets within that Folder will be loaded — sub-folders will not be included), and/or the entire Resource Library. The last 2 options will automatically reflect the logged-in user's permissions.
  • Show the text palette when editing text: If enabled (default), the user can modify the styling and appearance of the text. If disabled, the user can only change the copy.
  • Show styles or fonts in text palette: If the text palette is enabled, you can either restrict the user to choose only from pre-defined styles within the InDesign document or allow access to additional options.
  • Colors to show in color picker: Both document colors and generic colors (default), or only document colors.
  • Limit document colors to current spread: If enabled (default is disabled), document colors can be restricted to the current page.
  • Select colors with eye dropper: If enabled (default is disabled), the user can select and use any color via the eye dropper.
  • Allow advanced options in the image palette: If enabled (default), and the layer is unlocked, the user can rotate, re-align, etc. the image layer.
