When Bulk Downloading images, you can apply Transformations, allowing you to download Presets or other Formats, as well as or instead of the Original file. Users can also create Ad Hoc Presets - a temporary Preset which will only apply to the current download request. Transformations are generated after the user Downloads and will be included in the zip folder alongside the Original files (if also selected for download) or other file types (videos, documents, etc).
This article covers the options available when applying Transformations to images during the Bulk Download process. To find out more about how to Bulk Download your Resources in general, please read the article available here.
Note that the ability to restrict Groups and Users to different levels of permissions for Resource Transformations, specifically around Ad Hoc Transformations and Transformation Presets, is now available.

Accessing Bulk Transformations
To access this feature, select multiple images and click Download in the Bulk Actions bar. If you're unsure about how to do this, you can follow the steps outlined in this article. If supported images are included in your download request, then when the Bulk Download Selected page opens (pictured below), you will be able to see a button in the bottom right corner called Transformation Options. Click this button to open the Bulk Transformations page. You can see this button highlighted in the screenshot below.
Bulk Transformations is available to anyone who can access the Bulk Download page, ie anyone with permission to Download the Resources (including Temporary Approval). It will only appear if there are supported images in the current download request.
Bulk Transform Selected
The Bulk Transform Selected page will load once the Transformation Options button has been selected. On this page you will see all images that can be transformed and your Transformation Options.
Note that only those images which were selected on the Bulk Download Selected page will appear here. Images that aren't supported for transformation, either because the format is not supported or the size of the image is above 50MB, will not appear on this page.
To go back to your Download Selected page and Download the images, click either the back arrow, the BACK button or the Back to Download Selection button. Clicking the close icon will also return the user to that page.
Images Display & Supported Images for Transformation
The images displayed on the left of your screen include all files that are supported for Transformation. The actual view of the images, ie either Mosaic or List, will depend on what was visible when the user clicked the Bulk Download action in the Folder.
In this area you can select or deselect images to apply transformations to and see what has already been applied. A count at the top of the image display will tell you how many Transformations have successfully been applied. You can read more about that below.
Images that are supported for transformation include most image files under 50MB. Whilst most image formats are supported, those that are not include (but are not limited to): crw, raf, ico, indd.
Transformation Options
On the right side of the page are the Transformation Options. Here you can select File Formats and Presets and apply them to the images selected on the left. Transformations that are successfully applied will be added to the original file during the download process, providing you with additional file(s) meeting those Preset / Format requirements.
Please note that the total limit for Transformations in one Download is 150. There is no limit for how many can be selected in each section (as listed below).
The Transformation options available are included below.
Formats
The File Formats supported include:
- Original
- JPEG
- PNG
- GIF
- BMP
- TIFF
- WEBP
Global Presets
Presets allow a user to transform and create a common set of parameters that can be applied to an Image. Global Presets are usually created for common transformations that need to be regularly applied to images. Global Presets are available to be selected and applied in Bulk Download. If Global Presets exist, all users will be able to apply them when downloading images. Note that this section is scrollable and you may need to scroll down to view all your options.
Global Presets can be created and managed in Share / Embed and in the Single Download page. Users with Admin Permission on Resources will also be able to Add Global Presets from the Bulk Transform page using the Add Preset button. If you wish to Edit or Remove Global Presets, it's advised you do so in Share / Embed or Single Download. The process for Adding a Global Preset is the same in Bulk Transform as it is in other areas. You can read more about Adding a Global Preset here.
Ad Hoc Presets
Ad Hoc Presets allow users to add a one-off Transformation that is only available for the current Download Request. These can be created by all users. The options available for Ad Hoc Preset copy the settings available for Global Presets, allowing users to select from Basic or Advanced Preset options. You can see a full explanation of those options here or view an example of how to create one below.
Once you add an Ad Hoc Preset, it will automatically be pre-selected on the Transformation Options page, allowing you to quickly apply it to your images. Like with other transformations, Presets will only be accessible once the images have been Downloaded.
Applying Transformations Options in Bulk
To apply Transformations to your images, start by selecting the Formats or Presets you require. There is no limit to how many Transformations you can apply at once, but keep in mind that you can only apply 150 Transformations for each Download Request. So the total amount taking into to account how many images are selected, should be less than 150.
Once you have selected the Transformation options, ensure the images you wish the Transformations to be applied to have been selected on the left. The Transformations will only be applied to selected images.
Once all of your selections have been made, click the Add to Selected button at the bottom of the Transformation Options panel. If you haven't exceeded the Transformations Limit, all of the Transformations will automatically be applied to the selected Images. The counts applicable to each image will be updated accordingly.
You can see an example of how to Apply Transformations below.
Removing Transformations
If you have added the wrong Preset or Format and need to remove some of your applied Transformations, there are a few ways to do this.
Remove all Selected Presets
The icon (pictured below) at the bottom at the Images display allows you to remove all transformations, including Formats, from selected Images. This action can be undone via the success snackbar that will appear once the removal has been successful.
Transformations Options Popup
When you click on the Transformation icon at the top right of any image, you will open the Transformations Options popup (if you have already applied a Transformation). Whilst on this popup, there is another Remove Presets icon (highlighted below) which will remove all Transformations on the current popup. Once you click the icon, remember to click the Save button to save these changes.
Preset Detail Popup
The Info icon next to any Preset in the Transformation Options List, opens a popup which contains information about each Transformation option. Within the popup is also an option (highlighted below) to Remove the Preset from all selected Images. This will only remove the chosen Preset and will have no impact on other Transformations.
Transformation Limits
The Transformation Limit is 150 for each Download request. This means that the user can apply a total of 150 Transformations total to all images. If there were 150 images for example, a user could apply 1 Transformation to each. Once they have clicked the Download button, the "request" is ended, so they can bulk download again and select another 150 Transformations.
The Original file is not included in the Transformation limit. Similarly, if you apply a file format which is the same as the Original this will also not apply.
If the user has tried to apply Transformations, but the number of transformations selected would take the user over the 150 limit; none of the transformations will be applied. The user will see an error snackbar with a count informing them of how many transformations they need to remove in order to apply the presets. The user can either uncheck some of the transformations they wanted to apply or unselect resources on the left. If they click Refresh Count in the popup after making changes, the count will update. Once the count is 0 (so the new Transformations wouldn't exceed the limit), the Transformations will automatically be applied.
Transforming Individual Images
As well as adding Presets in bulk or in batches, users can also apply (& remove) transformations directly to each individual image. There are 2 ways to do this; either via the Transformation Details popup or on the Transform Image page.
Transformation Details popup
The Transformation Details popup will be available as soon as one Transformation has been added to an image. This is indicated by a count of transformations applied to that image which will appear in the upper right hand corner (as highlighted below). Click the count or icon to open the Transformation Details popup.
Once the popup is open, it will display a list of all transformations that have been applied to the image already, including Formats, Global and Ad Hoc Presets. From here, you can remove individual presets by unchecking them and clicking Save. You can also access the Transform Image page by clicking the Edit button at the bottom of the popup.
Transform Image Page
To access the Transform Image page, click Edit on the Transformation Details popup. This will open a new overlay, with a larger Preview of the image selected and the current transformations that have been applied.
Unlike on the Bulk page, all changes made to the Transformation Options panel will apply to the featured image. To save your changes, whether you remove or add them, click the Apply to Image button at the bottom of the page.
Downloading your Transformations
To Download your Transformations, click the Back to Download Selected or any of the Back options on the Transformation pages. Once you're on the Bulk Download Selected page you will see the count icon appearing for each image transformations have been applied to. If you wish you can still deselect images from this page. If a file is not selected, it will not be downloaded. This includes the Original file and any transformations which have been applied.
Click Download Selected to download your Resources. Once you've clicked this, you will be able to view the progress of the Transformations and Zipping process in the Jobs List Popup. When these processes have been completed, the zipfile will automatically download according to your Browsers behaviour. It's important to ensure that popups are not blocked on your browser as this might prevent the file from downloading. If you wish to download the file again, you can do so by clicking the Download action in the Jobs popup.
You can see an example of this process below.
