This article outlines key information about how IntelligenceBank's Markup Comments and Annotations feature works for video file types undergoing review and approval.
Table of Contents
Key Benefits
Users can add annotations to specific time points on a video and can also add Markup Comments that will apply to a time range, adding both a start and end time to indicate the period when the markup should apply. When the video file is played, annotations will appear over the video as added.
The ability to add these types of annotations on videos enhances the proofing and review process, since users can leverage annotation tools uniquely helpful for videos for more targeted feedback. This makes the proofing and review process on video files easier and more intuitive.
Other annotations functionality is the same as for other file types. To read more about that, click here.
Video File Type Support
Once a video file is uploaded into the platform, it will automatically be converted to the MP4 format (unless that's the video's original format). This allows the video to be used in the video players and allows the user to add annotations to the video within Markup Comments.
In addition to MP4, OGG and WEBM files are automatically supported in Markup Comments.
Navigating the Video Preview
On the left side of the Markup Comments page is the video preview. Here is where you can add annotations, play the video, and make adjustments to the time of the annotations.
The top area above the video preview is dedicated to your annotation options. You can read more about those below.
Video Player Options
Under your video preview are a number of settings (all pictured below) which enable you to easily adjust the video. The numbers in the screenshot correspond to each setting in the list.
- Volume: Increase, decrease, or mute the video's audio.
- Loop Video: When enabled, the video will play continuously on a loop.
- Playback Speed: Speed up or slow down the video.
- Aspect Ratio: Show an Aspect Ratio guide on the video to indicate what it will look like if that ratio is applied.
- Play actions: Play or navigate between video frames via the arrows on either side of the play icon.
- Video Time / Duration: The first timestamp shows where the video is currently playing. The second timestamp shows the total length of the video.
Annotation Timing Options
Under the Video Player Options are 3 lines of content more specific to the annotations that have been added. These also allow users to navigate the video in greater detail. The numbers in the screenshot and list below indicate how each element works:
- The Video Player bar allows you to navigate along it - clicking will take you to the corresponding point in the video. Hovering over the bar shows a thumbnail of that point.
- The Video Annotations bar indicates where your annotations are based on their associated timestamp. It's also where you can update the time of the annotation or switch it to a time range (see more below). If there are multiple annotations for the same timestamp, the one selected will be the last one added. Selecting an annotation in this bar will automatically update the video player to that timestamp.
- The Thumbnail bar displays thumbnails of each video frame, automatically generated for each second of the video. Clicking a thumbnail updates the video player to that thumbnail's time. Note that after uploading a new video it can sometimes take a few minutes for these thumbnails to be generated.
Adding a Video Annotation
The process of adding a video annotation is the same as for other annotation types. You can see an example of how to do this below. As with all annotations, you need to save the corresponding comment before it will appear for all users.
Changing the Time of an Annotation
Once an annotation has been saved, it will appear in the Video Annotations bar as a dot, with the dot colour reflecting the colour of your annotation.
If you wish to change the location of the annotation within the same timestamp, click on the annotation on the video preview directly and drag it to update. Note this is only available for the creator of the annotation.
If you wish to change the single timestamp of the annotation - the time the annotation applies to - locate the annotation dot in the Video Annotations bar (easily done by clicking on the annotation or comment). Then, click and drag the dot to the new timestamp. This is only available for the creator of the annotation.
Changing an Annotation's Time Point to a Time Range
The Video Annotations bar displays an indication of all annotations added to the video via dots. When you click on any one of these dots, handles will appear on either side (as pictured below).
To update the Start or End time of an annotation, click the corresponding handle and drag to the relevant timestamp (as demonstrated below).
If you already have a time range and want to move it, select it on the Video Annotations bar directly (avoiding the handles) and drag it to its new position.
Navigating via the Markup Comments Panel
The Markup Comments panel functions essentially the same as for other file types. The difference for video files is that comments with annotations are grouped based on the related time of the comment.
If a user clicks on the comment, it will load the annotation and update the video player. The user can also navigate to a timestamp or time range by selecting the time that appears above the comments, as highlighted below:
